 Regional Schools Investment Competition Guidance Document and Competition Rules 

  1. Introduction 

The Regional Schools Investment Competition is a dynamic learning experience for high school and first-year college students as future investors. The investment game introduces the students to investing and more specifically to investing via the Eastern Caribbean Securities Exchange. The initiative provides the opportunity for students to experience securities market activity firsthand. Participants will have the opportunity to test their knowledge while gaining useful investing insights and skills. 

The Eastern Caribbean Securities Exchange (ECSE) and its partners (the licensed, member broker dealers and the Eastern Caribbean Securities Regulatory Commission (ECSRC) are committed to this education and awareness thrust targeting young people, to stimulate and provide a pathway to young investors toward the advancement of money and capital market development in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union. 

  1. Competition Objectives 
  • To spread awareness to the youth (and by extension to their teachers and parents) of the existence of the ECSE, the Eastern Caribbean Securities Market (ECSM), the Regional Government Securities Market (RGSM), the ECSRC and the ECSE licensed member broker dealers. 
  • To introduce and educate the youth population (across the ECCU) about Investing in Securities on the ECSM and RGSM. 
  • To spread awareness to the youth regarding the process of trading securities and the role of the broker-dealer. 

To excite and inspire young people to learn more about investing and to become active market participants in the future. 

  1. Eligible Participants 
  • 3rd form through 5th form (grades 9-11) high school students and 1st year 6th form/college students in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (i.e., Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines). 
  • A maximum of one group per school. The number of students per group can range from 4 to 6 students competing in the Investment Game.  

Please note that: 

  • The school administration would determine the composition of the competing group(s) and which teacher(s) will be assigned to lead the competing group(s). There should be a minimum of one teacher assigned to assist each competing group. Note, a maximum of two teachers will be recognized as teacher guides in this competition.  
  • Teams should conceive of their own group names and have fun with it. They are to be creative and use good judgment. Team names may not contain or connote any offensive, vulgar or inappropriate language or idea. 
  1. Format of the Competition  

The competing school groups will compete to vie for the top prize of overall Regional Champion giving both the school and country they represent, bragging rights. The expectation is that there will be participating schools from all eight ECCU member countries (Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Vincent and the Grenadine).  

  • Each competing group will be provided with a notional initial investment amount of EC$50,000 (this value will be a mix of equity/company shares and cash). The group will be expected to manage their portfolio of investments by deciding what shares they would like to purchase or sell to achieve their goal of wealth creation (increase the value of their portfolio). 
  • The market will operate with eight to ten companies which participants can place buy and sell orders on. A description of each company would be provided for all participants, including share/stock price, historical financial performance, and an outline of the company’s strategy for the next 3 years.  
  • The investment assumption for the competition would be that each group has a goal of wealth creation as their primary investment objective – To increase the value of their portfolio. 
  • There will be market news announcements issued daily at a pre-determined time. These announcements should be analyzed to determine whether the information might influence securities purchase/sale decisions. 
  • The competing groups are expected to meet on days designated as ‘Meeting Days’ at a convenient time to discuss their portfolio and decisions with respect to purchasing or selling stocks/equity toward their goal of wealth creation and in keeping with the strategic objectives the group sets for itself. The group will be expected to complete and submit to their assigned broker dealer a purchase/sales order form on their meeting days and are to include their trade notes explaining the rationale for their investment decisions.  
  • Reports on market activity, trades and closing prices will be provided to the competing groups by the broker dealers so that they can review prior to their meetings. 
  • The top performing school/group at the end of the competition will be judged the winner of the competition. 

NOTE:  A Day-to-Day guide and schedule will be provided to the competing groups which would provide more details on expected activities to be carried out during the competition inclusive of timelines for deliverables.

Investment Education Webinar 

A virtual Investment Education Webinar will be held on the morning of Thursday 2nd October 2025. The webinar is an educational initiative to provide students with information on investing, types of financial securities and the securities market and the importance of investing. The session will also provide insights into how the Eastern Caribbean Securities Market works and the role of the various market institutions and stakeholders. All students and teacher guides taking part in the competition should attend the Education Webinar.  Furthermore, this session will be open to as many students as the schools can accommodate (including students who are not participating in the competition). 

Competition Briefing  

A competition briefing will be held virtually on Wednesday 8th October 2024. This session will be used to discuss the format and rules specific to the Investment Competition and allow for any questions and clarifications before the commencement of the competition. All students and teacher guides participating in the competition are expected to be present for the Competition Briefing.  

6. Competition (Performance) Evaluation – To Determine winning group/school. 

  1. Regional Investment Competition: 
  • 60% weighting – portfolio valuation 
  • The cash on hand + the value of the securities in the portfolio at the end of the trading period. 
  • 40% weighting – investment competition video presentation (to be recorded and submitted in mp4 format by each competing group) and Trade Notes. 

NOTE: The evaluation criteria will be provided to the Competing groups prior to the competition. 

The group with the highest overall score will be the winner. 

  1. Prize Giving 

The Prize Giving ceremony will be scheduled for the first quarter of 2026 and is expected to be a Hybrid format (in person and virtual attendance).  More details will be provided closer to the time of the prize giving. 

  • Regional Champion 
  • Monetary prize of EC$6,500 for the school. 
  • Investment prize, valued at EC$540 for each student.  
  • A gift bag for students and teachers. 
  • Waiver of Broker Fees for Teacher Assistants (maximum of two teachers) – on their first investment. 
  • A certificate of achievement for each of the student members and a certificate of appreciation for the role the teacher(s) played in assisting the students. 
  • A Rotational Champion Trophy. 
  • Runner Up  
  • Monetary prize of EC$3,000 for the school. 
  • Investment prize, valued at EC$270 for each student.  
  • A gift bag for students and teachers. 
  • Waiver of Broker Fees for Teacher Assistants (maximum of two teachers) – on their first investment. 
  • A certificate of achievement for each of the student members and a certificate of appreciation for the role the teacher(s) played in assisting the students. 
  • A Rotational Champion Trophy. 
  • Prizes will also be given for video presentations: 1) Clearly Presented Strategic Approach;  
    2) Creative Presentation/video production.  All student/teacher participants will receive certificates of participation.
