ABOUT
THE FORUM
The Eastern Caribbean
Central Bank (ECCB)
and the Eastern Caribbean Securities Exchange Ltd (ECSE)
in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Global Corporate
Governance Forum (GCGF)-World Bank and the Caribbean Development Bank
(CDB) will be hosting a Caribbean Corporate Governance Forum at the
Central Bank's Headquarters over the period 3 to 5 September 2003.
Corporate governance
is considered to be integral to the development of sound, transparent
and properly functioning money and capital markets. Good Corporate Governance
is also necessary to engender investor confidence and attract liquidity
to these markets. However, in an environment where organised markets
are nascent and where traditionally, there has been a weak market for
corporate control, credible governance structures have not always been
demonstrated.
All other regions
of the world have recently organized corporate governance forums or
roundtables under the auspices of the OECD and the World Bank. But this
is the first time that such a forum is being organized for the Caribbean
region. It will provide a platform for stakeholders across our region
to discuss and explore ways for enhancing corporate governance within
our markets. It will also provide participants with an opportunity to
participate in the wider global policy dialogue on this issue through
the development of a Caribbean-wide position.
Over the three days
of informative and interactive sessions, participants will be provided
the opportunity to engage in discussions of some of the major global
issues and trends being explored for strengthening the international
financial system and reducing the vulnerability of emerging markets
to financial crises. Prominent international- and regional- experts
have been invited to speak at this forum.
